This article was first published in the quarterly print edition of Himal Southasian magazine (Vol. 29, No. 1) – ‘At the Cost of Health’.
Since that time, the magazine’s founder Kanak Mani Dixit has been arrested in relation to corruption allegations, prompting an outcry from human rights and media freedom groups.
While far from qualified to comment on the case, having found Himal to be the only publication consistently interested in covering Maldives stories in depth, I can confidently say that any negative impact upon the paper’s work would be a loss to journalism across the region.
